Requirements for Classic and Antique Vehicle Registration
In the state of Texas, motorists seeking to register custom cars or antique vehicles must first determine if their vehicle qualifies as a Classic Motor Vehicle or an Antique Vehicle. Classic Motor Vehicles must be at least 25 years old and have an actual cash value that is less than the retail value of a comparable motor vehicle of the same make, model, and year of manufacture. Antique Vehicles must be at least 45 years old and determined to be a collector's item.
Designation of Antique License Plates
Antique license plates in Texas must include the words "Antique Auto," "Antique Truck," "Antique Motorcycle," "Antique Bus," or "Military Vehicle" on the plate. These plates are issued for passenger cars, trucks, or motorcycles that meet the following criteria:
- Are at least 25 years old
- Are considered a collector's item
- Are not used for daily transportation
