Flag of the United Kingdom

Overview

The national flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag. It is a combination of the flags of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The flag was first created in 1606, when King James I of England and Scotland united the two kingdoms under a single crown. The current version of the flag was adopted in 1801, when the Kingdom of Ireland was added to the union.

Design

The Union Jack is a rectangular flag with a blue background. The flag is divided into four quadrants by a red cross of Saint George (England) and a white cross of Saint Andrew (Scotland). The red diagonal cross of Saint Patrick (Northern Ireland) is superimposed on the white cross of Saint Andrew.
