Shark Sightings in Mauritius: Common But Attacks Are Rare

Overview of Shark Attacks in Mauritius

While shark sightings are common in the waters surrounding Mauritius, shark attacks on humans are relatively rare. According to official records, there have been a total of 10 shark attacks in Mauritius, of which four have unfortunately resulted in fatalities. This article provides an overview of the shark attacks that have occurred in Mauritius, highlighting the species involved, locations, and safety measures.

Notable Shark Attack Incidents

One of the most notable shark attacks in Mauritius occurred in 2011, when a 13-year-old boy was fatally attacked while snorkeling in the Blue Bay Marine Park. The attack was attributed to a bull shark. In 2015, a 42-year-old German tourist was killed in a shark attack while swimming in the lagoon near Belle Mare. The species of shark involved in this attack was identified as a tiger shark.

In 2017, a 36-year-old French tourist was seriously injured in a shark attack while surfing at Tamarin Bay. The attack was attributed to a great white shark. Despite these isolated incidents, shark attacks in Mauritius remain rare, with the majority of encounters resulting in non-fatal injuries or no injuries at all.

Safety Measures and Precautions

To ensure the safety of swimmers, surfers, and other water enthusiasts, the Mauritius government has implemented several safety measures, including:

  • Shark nets have been installed in popular swimming areas, such as Blue Bay Marine Park and Flic en Flac.
  • Warning signs and flags are displayed on beaches to alert swimmers of potential shark activity.
  • Lifeguards are present on most popular beaches to monitor the water and respond to emergencies.

In addition to these measures, it is recommended that swimmers and surfers take the following precautions:

  • Swim or surf in designated areas where lifeguards are present.
  • Avoid swimming or surfing during dawn or dusk, when sharks are most active.
  • Do not swim or surf in areas where there is known shark activity.
  • Do not swim or surf alone.
  • If you see a shark, remain calm and leave the water slowly.
By following these safety measures and precautions, visitors to Mauritius can minimize the risk of shark encounters and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the island's waters.
