George Russell's race at the Australian Grand Prix ended in spectacular fashion when the Mercedes driver ended up on two wheels on the final lap.
Russell's Crash on the Penultimate Lap
Just when it seemed that Russell was set to finish in the points, he lost control of his Mercedes on the penultimate lap of the race in Melbourne. The reigning champion spun off the track and crashed heavily into the barriers.
Miraculously, Russell was able to walk away from the incident unscathed. However, the crash brought out the red flag and ended his race prematurely.
Alonso Penalised, Relegated to Eighth
In a separate incident, Fernando Alonso was handed a 20-second penalty post-race for a track limits violation. This dropped him down to eighth place from his original finishing position of sixth.
Russell's Crash a Setback in Title Defense
The crash was a major setback for Russell in his bid to defend his championship title. The Mercedes driver had started the race in fifth place but was unable to make any significant progress in the early stages.
