GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany – FC Schalke 04 made a resounding start to their 2. Bundesliga season, crushing Eintracht Braunschweig 5-1 in a dominant display at the VELTINS-Arena stadium on Friday.
The hosts took an early lead through Rodrigo Zalazar's header in the 12th minute, and never looked back. Marius Bülter doubled the advantage before half-time, and goals from Simon Terodde, Michael Frey, and Tom Krauß sealed a comfortable victory.
Braunschweig's only consolation was a penalty converted by Robin Krauße late in the second half. Schalke's win puts them atop the league standings after the opening weekend, while Braunschweig languishes in 17th place.
